I WANT MY PASSY

Do you love Sandra Boynton books as much as me? She is a child author and we love her at our house. She has a book entitled "I WANT MY BINKIT" and it reminds me of the day I had today. In the book a dinosour is looking for his "Binkit" (ie. blanket). In my story it was charlie looking for his Passy. Here is how our story goes.

I will admit I am a passy person. I have given both of my children passy's as babies and I love them. However, it really bothers me to see older children with passy's. So right before Mary Alice turned 2 we limited her passy use to night/nap time only and then when she turned 2 we had a "passy party" and threw away all her passy's and then ate cupcakes! It went over so well we never had any problems.

So as you know Charlie is about to be 2 and so we have been limiting his passy to night/nap time only and while it has been harder for him it has been easier the last few weeks. And the "plan" was to have his passy party in a few weeks. Notice the word plan in quotions. So.......charlie started preschool last week (two days a week) and it has been hard for him. I have not been sending his passy with him to school because we have not been using it at home during the day. Well....as we drove up to preschool charlie started saying "no....no....no" and by the time his teacher came to get him out of my car (in drop off line) he was crying. So about one hour into preschool I get a call from his very soft spoken, very mild tempered teacher. Here is how our conversation went:

Mrs. Acosta: Mrs. Hirst?

Mrs. Hirst: Yes

Mrs. Acosta: This is Mrs. Acosta, Charlie's teacher.

Mrs. Hirst: Oh yes, hi

Mrs. Acosta: Mrs. Hirst, does charlie use a passy?

Mrs. Hirst: Well yes he does, kinda...we have really only been trying to use it during bedtime

Mrs. Acosta: Oh yes, well he has really been miserable and crying since school started and all he is saying to me is "pass....pass.....pass.....pass" and he is looking around the class and in his backpack

Mrs. Hirst: Oh....well i did not send one to school with him....would you like me to bring his passy?

Mrs. Acosta: Oh, yes that would be great. And i know you are trying to get him to stop using his passy and I will take it away from him when he puts it down or does not need it but I think during this time of transistion (maybe a few weeks) it would be nice for him to have something that brings him comfort.

Mrs. Hirst: Ok...i will be right there.

Can you believe it? I ran a passy up to school. The note that came home with Charlie about his day said " charlie had a great day once he got his passy"

Go figure. It is funny how your kids will make you eat your words sometimes. Somehow i have a feeling charlie will be making me eat my words "my kids will not have a passy after age 2"

hope you had a great day!

Let that baby have that passy! Ansley had Lambie & her thumb ALOT at 2 year old preschool. She really needed that transitional help as well. Just goes to show that one child will be the same as the other! Your a good mommy for taking the passy to school.

Charlie,

Enjoy your passy at preschool. Your mother loved her passy alot.
And now that she remembers how she felt when she was two years old - she is such a great mom to let you have your passy at school. What an encouragment to go to school.
It is hard to belive that you are old enough to go to preschool. I know that you will learn to love it, especially since you can have your passy.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Love, G-MA

Never worry about Charlie's communication skills! When he needs something, he can certainly get his meaning across. I, too, learned early not to be overly committed to "my child will" or "my child will never"--seems as though they "didn't" and then they "did". Thanks for sharing such a cute story. Hugs, Mamma

Chloe took puppy and Eliott took Bumby to 2 year old preschool. I think E even took bumby in his backpack last year! Comfort is a wonderful thing--definitely let'em have it!
